(By Robert Jones) This is a map of the 2012 election results done by data visualization expert John Nelson. It shows where, how many, and how people voted in the 2012 presidential election. Results are broken out by county, and each dot represents 100 votes—either for President Obama or Governor Romney. One of the things that this map shows is that there are no "blue" or "red" states—instead, there are varying shades of violet and magenta. In addition to showing voting tendencies, this map also shows population density by state, and helps counter the standard bias of red/blue maps toward areas that are large geographically but sparse in population.
