Google Puts Money on Robots, Using the Man Behind Android (via New York Times) Thumbnail

Over the last half-year, Google has quietly acquired seven technology companies and an array of robotics and artificial intelligence start-ups in the United States and Japan to create a new generation of robots. Unlike their futuristic X lab, the Google robotics effort — led by engineer Andy Rubin — is meant to sell new products sooner rather than later.

The seven companies are capable of creating technologies needed to build a mobile, dexterous robot. That is consistent with a vision put forward by the Google co-founder Larry Page, who has argued that technology should be deployed wherever possible to free humans from drudgery and repetitive tasks.
