Media Alert: Rocket Fuel's Research Finds Shoppers Plan on Spending More for the 2013 Holiday Season

REDWOOD CITY, CA--(Marketwired - Nov 5, 2013) - Rocket Fuel (NASDAQ: FUEL), a leading provider of artificial intelligence advertising solutions for digital marketers, announced today the results of a consumer research study centered around spending habits for shoppers this 2013 holiday season.

Key Findings:

  • HOLIDAY SHOPPERS PLAN ON SPENDING AS MUCH OR MORE IN 2013

More than a quarter (26%) of holiday shoppers plan on spending more in 2013 than they did last year, with the majority of the rest (59%) planning on matching their spending from a year ago. The bulk of this increased spending is expected to be online, where consumers are 1.5x more likely to expect to spend more in 2013.

  • FOCUS ON QUALITY (AND NOT JUST PRICE)

Consumers indicate that the #1 factor in determining where to shop for gifts this holiday season is quality (though price is a close second). Online advertising programs should promote not just pricing and sales or promotions, but include quality as well.

  • BACK TO SCHOOL SHOPPING A GOOD INDICATOR FOR HOLIDAY HABITS

Although parents are more likely to plan on beginning their holiday shopping early, this behavior is dependent in part on their back-to-school shopping habits: Parents who start their back-to-school shopping early tend to do likewise for their holiday shopping.

  • CONVERSION RATES INCREASE ON CYBER MONDAY

Looking at campaign data from campaigns delivered by Rocket Fuel in November 2010, 2011, and 2012 shows an increase in conversion rates across specific campaign verticals on Cyber Monday, with the largest increases in conversion rates for fashion/clothing campaigns (+50%), retail campaigns (+35%), and consumer technology (+30%).
